I'm author ELLE STRAUSS and welcome to my website!

I write fun, lower Young Adult (teen) fiction to do with whimsical things like time-travel, fairies and merfolk.

When my serious side peeks out, she's called LEE STRAUSS. She likes to write upper YA about real things that have happened in the past, or made up things that could quite possibly happen in the future.

This blog is about books, mine and other fab authors', but occasionally I'll share about other topics.

Thanks for dropping by!

My Love Hate Relationship with Travel

I'm a late bloomer when it comes to traveling.

I was in my thirties with four kids before I went anywhere besides Mexico for a weeks vacation. I've been fortunate to have traveled a lot since then, especially in the area of Europe.

Which I love.

However, I'm finding out a few things about myself as I get older. I kind of like routine. I like to get up around the same time every morning and feel refreshed not jetlagged. I like to have a soy latte before breakfast. Then check my mail. Then eat breakfast, the same thing everyday - musli and 1% milk. I work and then eat lunch (usually granola and yogurt). I work some more and have another soy latte. After dinner I wind down with a glass of wine and maybe some TV. I go to bed at the same time and read until I'm tired, usually sleeping by 11:00.

Basically, I've gotten boring.

Traveling entails less sleep and more sitting, which also brings on some *ahem* digestive issues.

And living out of a suitcase and hoping there's going to be an opportunity to do laundry at some point.

My saving grace is McCafe! I know, I can't believe it either. Starbucks is only found in airports and big cities. If you aren't aware, McDonalds is taking over the world, and McCafe sells soy latte! And these great little birdfood like cookies.

I don't want to come off as a whiner. I love seeing new places, meeting new people, experiencing new cultures. I feel very blessed that I get to do what I do. I'm even managing to squeeze in some writing and time on the internet, though it sparse.

A couple days ago we stopped at a town called Schwabish Halle. It's an in-tact medieval town, and I admit, really cool to see.

this is not disneyland

old world, new car

black forest cake and coffee seemed fitting
Tomorrow we heading into Nuremberg. I'm really excited about this because Nuremberg features prominently in my book PLAYING WITH MATCHES. I feel like I've been visiting Nuremberg in my head for years, and I'm so glad I'm going to get to do it for real.

  1. Oh gosh... I'm SO the same way. Travel I love. Travel I hate. And for all the same reasons you outlined!

Buuuuut.... isn't Europe beautiful? Definitely a perk to the otherwise dreadful suitcase living experience! Haha ( :

  2. Totally agree! Traveling is bittersweet. That being said, I'm very jealous you're in Europe! I want to go to Italy SOOOO bad!

  3. I HATE jet lag. Detest it. Utterly. But it's the price you have to pay for all the wonderful experiences of travel.
But, McCafe? Oh Elle... [shakes head in deep sorrow] ;)
The Schwarzwälder Kirsch looks fantastic. Now I want some.
