I'm author ELLE STRAUSS and welcome to my website!

I write fun, lower Young Adult (teen) fiction to do with whimsical things like time-travel, fairies and merfolk.

When my serious side peeks out, she's called LEE STRAUSS. She likes to write upper YA about real things that have happened in the past, or made up things that could quite possibly happen in the future.

This blog is about books, mine and other fab authors', but occasionally I'll share about other topics.

CLOCKWISE HAS A NEW COVER! And why I changed it.

Clockwise has a new cover and I'm super stoked about it!

Isn't it perty?
I released it yesterday on my Facebook author page (if you haven't visited me there, please do. :)

It's not yet up on Amazon but should be by the end of the weekend and will gradually replace the old cover in all the different media spots.

Why did I change the cover?

It wasn't because I didn't like the first one. I did. A lot.

However, one thing I learned in this school called DIY publishing is that covers are really important (duh) and that certain covers are more reflective of certain genres.

What I got right with the first cover is the concepts of light and fun, whimsical and otherworldy.

What I got wrong was it didn't look YA enough. Illustrated covers are found widely in the middle grade section (a fact that hadn't occurred to me).

That, plus I just wasn't getting the kind of initial response I wanted from enough people -- the "love it" factor.

When you're doing everything yourself and for the first time, it's easy to miss the mark on some things. The great thing is, it's easy to do it over.

I'm super excited about this new cover. And wait until you see book two!!

  3. The girl is adorable! I really like this a lot. And you know, you're right--I loved the old cover, but it did make me think MG. Funny how that works.

    1. I'm glad you think so. I wanted it to have a sci-fi otherworldly feel. The girl is a daughter of a friend.

  15. Pretty awesome!!! I think you did a wonderful job. And I know what you mean about covers. I buy a lot of Kindle books based on cover. I guess I'm just that shallow. LOL. Sometimes it I get what I paid for, sometimes not so much but this looks like it will definitely be worth it.

  16. You are very wise my dear. I loved the first cover too but now that you mention it, at first glance I did think it was middle grade. Your new cover is very eye-catching and fits the novel perfectly. I love it!

  17. This is such a fantastic cover...definitely one that I would snatch up off the shelf just to see what it's about. And I love that you immediately get a hint that it's about time travel. Your previous cover was lovely, but you're right, I would have thought it was a MG book.

A very smart change on your part! This is definitely going on my tbr list!
